I was privileged to be a part of a historical moment for Scotch College in Melbourne by creating their first Indigenous Guernsey to be worn across many sports on Saturday the 27th of May as the start of Reconciliation Week 2023.
I created this design after spending an hour with some of the Indigenous boys who created their own sketched designs onto a blank guernsey template after hearing me talk about some of my artworks. I then took their sketches home and used elements from their designs to create the new ones, with the red one being their home jumper and the white one being their away jumper. These were worn on Saturday the 27th, not only by the First’s football team but the First’s soccer, hockey, basketball, rugby, and athletics teams. I unveiled the guernseys at the school assembly the day before, explaining the stories behind the artworks. It was very well received and was a positive step towards Reconciliation with the guernsey’s being a beautiful visual reminder of the commitment Scotch College is making to embrace and embed Aboriginal culture and voices within their School.
